Ok, this one is easy.
First of course you need a stereo and battery but then;
Go to Shucks Auto Supply or
similar and but a cheap base tube. I got
mine for $17
Then go to Radio Shack and
get an old mechanical crossover (you can see it pictured below, mounted just
under the Base tube), or a 10 Mili coil so you can
filter out a bunch of the treble without using an amp. You can always go and get a small amp but
this will be a bit heavier (not much) but it will also double your battery
power usage, not good in a boat without a motor to charge it.
The Set up:
I have a stereo mounted under the cockpit
floor, inside the boat and 2 speakers in the cockpit. They are wired on the front set of
speakers. I took the rear set of speaker
wires and bridged the power from the Stereo to the crossover then ran wire from
the crossover to the speaker. You must
make sure that your stereo can handle having the speakers bridged. This means taking the positive from the left
side and the negative from the right side to power the base tube (or visa
versa). If your stereo will do this you’ll
have more power at the speaker, if it won’t it will blow a fuse etc… so make
sure your stereo is bridgeable if you do this.
Other wise just run one side (left or right) to the crossover.
I mounted the tube directly under the cockpit
at the aft bulkhead so the base will resonate throughout the back of the boat. All of this weighed in at 4 lbs so it’s not
much of a weight issue.
